Why do you believe this tree should be selected as the winner in this category?
A people watcher, I often observe human characteristics and behaviours within trees while driving on rural highways to see family and friends in London. Visually, the painterly illustrations depict how our personal experiences shape or inform the perspective in which we see or interact with our surroundings. This tree is located on the edge of suburban development and is at risk of being cut down. The land behind is already levelled and spotted with machinery. I couldn't help but notice how gracefully poised this tree was against the stripped landscape. Its flowing and delicate branches reminded me of a dancer and of being in ballet class admiring all of the elongated limbs and torsos around me. I feel this artwork is noteworthy as it captures human elements of grace, determination, poise, fear, and loneliness in its struggle to survive our carbon footprint, much like how I felt as an overweight kid in dance class.
My story is embedded amidst the leaves and reads:
I think I was five when my parents first put me into dance. Unfortunately, I immediately felt out of place. When I looked around, I didn't seem to fit any ideal body shape. I was far from petite, nor was I tall and thin. To put it simply, delicate and graceful were two adjectives that wouldn't have been used to describe me. Despite this, for weeks I tried my best to keep up with all of the beautiful ballerinas, but all was lost when I showed up to our final recital wearing the wrong colour of tights!
