Why do you believe this tree should be selected as the winner in this category?
This towering, landmark maple tree (and I'm not positive about the subspecies of maple tree) is located inside the front gates of historic Labatt Memorial Park ~ a designated historic site under Part IV of the Ontario Act ~ and appears to be about 150-175 years old.
If this estimated age is accurate, the tree predates the ballpark, which opened as Tecumseh Park in the spring of 1877. Labatt Park is the oldest, continually used baseball grounds in the world.
It is extremely rare to have a tree of this size and age within the property of a baseball stadium.
Originally, the tree was in the backyard of a home on Wilson Avenue before the City of London purchased the property to expand the park boundaries approximately 30 to 35 years ago.
There's always a few picnic tables nearby and a permanent barbeque where anyone can stop by and have a picnic or moment of quiet repose. The park has been owned by the City of London since 1937 and is open to the public during the spring, summer and fall months. There's plenty of shade and always a cool breeze under this giant maple tree.
