Cantebury Park - September 14th and 29th, 2018

Project type:
Park Naturalization

This fall, ReForest London held 2 separate planting events in Cantebury Park!  In total, 415 new native trees and shrubs were planted!!!

Our first event at Cantebury Park this fall included volunteers from Fairstone Financial and Tree Canada.  Sixteen Fairstone staff came out on the morning of Friday, September 14th and planted 125 trees and shrubs!  High fives all around to everyone who worked hard and braved the heat!  Your impact was immediate, and we are so incredibly thankful for the time and effort.  A special thank you to Donald from Tree Canada for spending the morning with us!

Planting day number 2 started out as a crisp fall morning turned into the PERFECT planting day!  On Saturday, September 29th, we were joined by 32 local community residents, families, children, students, and friends, to plant another 290 native trees and shrubs in Cantebury Park.

Volunteers at the planting had to learn all about planting trees, and what not to do. We heard from a repeat volunteer that our talks have left a lasting impression:

“I see people all over town with mulch volcanoes – I want to knock on their doors and fix it!” – Anne Gehman (Volunteer)

And others that were happy to let us know what a great experience they had had:

“It was my first time out to plant trees with ReForest London and it was a wonderful, fun, experience!  It was a beautiful, sunny day spent with friends and community members who came together to make London a little greener and leafier.  We were given an informative demo, then got to work digging holes, and working together to plant different types of trees.  It was a reminder of how simple and easy it can be to have a sustainable, positive impact on our local environment for many years to come!” – Brittany Kinchen (Volunteer)

Volunteers worked tirelessly over the course of the morning, digging holes, swapping stories, and making a huge impact to this neighbourhood park.  Many families and volunteers learned for the very first time how to plant a tree!  We are so grateful and appreciative to any and all of our new volunteers who take an interest in making an immediate difference to the environment through the benefits of planting trees!

Thank you to our Tree Specialists who put in some overtime after the event to ensure all of our trees were planted properly!  Your dedication and commitment is an integral part of ensuring these events run smoothly and everyone has a educating, fun experience.

For other volunteers interested in potentially becoming Tree Specialists themselves, please check out our volunteering page - we'd love to have you join the team!

A huge thank you to our funders of our plantings this fall at Cantebury Park – CN through the CN Ecoconnexions Program, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, Tree Canada and Fairstone Financial!  We cannot thank you enough for continuing to make the work we do possible!
