How to Measure a Tree Trunk's Circumference

If your tree is selected as a finalist for the Largest Tree Trunk Circumference category, it will be measured by an arborist using a professional tree measuring tool. However, you can estimate the tree's circumference using the following method.

Please do not just guess at the tree's circumference. Carefully follow the instructions below.

  1. Measure 1.35 meters (4.5 feet) from the base of the tree (where the tree comes out of the ground).
  2. Wrap a tape measure or string around the tree tightly and evenly at 1.35 metres.
  3. Record this length.

Note: If the tree forks before 1.35 meters, measure the smallest circumference between 1.35 metres and the ground below the lowest fork.
