If your tree is selected as a finalist for the Tallest Tree category, it will be measured by an arborist using a professional tree measuring tool. However, you can estimate the tree's height using the following method.
Please do not just guess at the tree's height. Carefully follow the instructions below.
- Hold your hand straight out in front of your eye and measure the distance from your eye to your hand.
- Find or cut a stick that is the same length as from your eye to your hand
- Hold the stick at its base vertically. Staying on ground level (or on the same contour as the base of the tree), move away from the tree while sighting the trunk base above your hand.
- Stop when the top of the stick is level with the top of the tree. The top of the tree should line up with the top of the stick. The base of the tree should line up with the base of the stick. Move only your eyes as you line up the top and base of the tree.
- Measure how far you are from the tree and that measurement - in feet - is the tree's height.
- You can report your tree's estimated height in feet or metres
