Seed Sowing – Pawpaws and Red Oaks

Red Oak:

Growing Instructions:
Seeds must be kept moist and in the fridge until planting. Plant in a deep pot. Sow seed 1-2 inches deep. Seeds may take 2-3 weeks to germinate and should emerge soon after. Transplant to full or partial sun.
Transplanting to Outdoors
Plant Spacing: 30-60ft (9-18m)
Height: 60-90ft (18-27m)
Blooms: Leaves develop early to mid spring. Foliage turns from bronze to red in autumn. Produces mid-to-large sized saucer-shaped acorns from mid-October through to November.
Soil: Slightly acidic or slightly neutral. Well drained loam or sandy loam soil.

Pawpaw:

Growing Instructions:
Seeds must be kept moist and in the fridge until planting. Sow in a deep pot. Seeds will begin germinating after 2-3 weeks, but may take up to 3 months to emerge. Transplant once tree outgrows pot. Keep in recommended spacing to encourage cross pollination. Young saplings must be kept in partial or full shade for two years but adult plants can grow in full sun. Frequent watering is necessary for young trees in first few years.

Plant Spacing: 8-15ft (2-5m)
Height: 15-30ft (5-9m)
Blooms: Flowers in early spring. Leaves turn yellow in autumn. Fruit is produced from late August through to mid-October.
Soil: Slightly acidic or slightly neutral. Well drained loam. Fertile and moist.
