A Bit About Me

My name is Taniya. I was born and brought up in Oman, and have recently moved to Canada! I am currently a graduate student in the department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the Western University.

Why do I volunteer with ReForest London?

When I moved to Canada, I was looking for a sense of belonging in the community and meeting new people. It was then I came across ReForest London! Their mission was so aligned with my values. Coming from a place where we lacked awareness about the environment and how trees are vital to our society, there was not much I could contribute to. So, coming across this wonderful team of ReForest London, I finally felt I could contribute to the community that I am currently in, and play a role in saving our planet and there was no better way than volunteering at Reforest London! And I absolutely enjoy it and would encourage others to do the same!

What is a fond memory?

One of my fondest memories was being a part of the Celebration Forest organizing committee. I got to learn so much about how to work better as a team, and it was such a fun and wonderful event despite my severe foot pain later (hahahaha)

What excites you most about working with trees or in the environmental sector?

Being able to make any amount of difference to the environment is what excites me most about trees. I have first hand witnessed loved ones suffering from the drastic effects of air pollution. Therefore, to be a part of one of the solutions (i.e. planting more trees) for protecting our environment is what makes me feel good about myself!

Which part of the volunteer experience do you enjoy the most and why?

I enjoy the Tree Giveaway events a lot! It makes me happy to see people so excited about receiving new trees and at the same time I also get to learn about the various tree species in Canada!

Thank you Taniya!
